What We Do

The honest tax note IRS rules don't allow a deduction for the value of donated labor - yours or your employees'. What is deductible: materials you donate at your cost, and out-of-pocket project expenses like mileage. We document both, and we'd rather tell you now than have your CPA tell you later.

Materials aren't free.

Donations go to the real cost of doing this work - the lumber, pipe, wire, fixtures, and permits for a neighbor's repair, plus the modest tools and software it takes to run the program well. We keep overhead lean and report it openly. Online giving is coming soon; for now, email us to pledge a gift or sponsor a project's materials.

Where we are in the process The Neighborhood Crew is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation in formation, and our application for federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status is being prepared. Until the IRS issues our determination letter, contributions are not yet tax-deductible. Once granted, exemption is generally retroactive to our incorporation date - we'll update this page the moment that changes, and we'll issue proper acknowledgment letters for every gift.

Started by a realtor who got tired of watching small problems become big ones.

Spencer Smock has spent his career inside San Diego homes - selling them, fixing them, walking hundreds of inspections. The pattern is always the same: deferred maintenance compounds like debt, and the people least able to pay are the ones living with the leak.

The Neighborhood Crew exists to break that pattern with the most direct tool available: skilled people showing up and doing the work for free.
